Gary is the Chairman of the Board and President of the ProtoStar Group. He has provided advice to, or served as an expert consultant for, private foundations and charitable trusts, including The Ford Foundation, James Irvine Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Benton Foundation, and MB Fund, and has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. He is the author of The Corporate Counsel’s Guide to Mediation, published by the American Bar Association (ABA) in 2010, and is an arbitrator for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).
Gary began the early part of his legal career with the prestigious law firm of Arnold & Porter, representing national and international clients in a variety of corporate, litigation, and regulatory matters. He later joined the General Counsel’s Office at the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), where he was responsible for a broad range of in-house corporate and transactional matters, including formulating the legal and policy positions for PBS and its 340 member stations. Subsequently, he was appointed by PBS’s Chief Executive Officer to be the Executive Director of the Digital Strategic Planning Office, where he formulated what the New York Times described as a “clearly articulated plan” for digital and high definition television. Gary is a graduate of Williams College (B.A. 1981). He received his law degree from The Boston University School of Law (J.D. 1984) and Master of Laws from the Morin Center for Banking and Financial Law at Boston University (LL.M. 1985). He is admitted to the District of Columbia and Florida Bars. He speaks Cantonese fluently. He enjoys trekking in the Himalayas and built a house in Kathmandu, Nepal. Concerned about the environment, Gary drives an all-electric vehicle. His hobbies include playing tennis, golf, and classical piano, and occasionally composing music and silly little rhymes.
