On May 13, 2017, the Diversionary Theatre in San Diego, California, presented the World Premiere production of the critically-acclaimed play “BALLAST,” by Georgette Kelly. “BALLAST tells the story of two trans and cisgender partners, exploring how gender affects their relationships, spirituality and destinies…. The play boldly confronts the challenges of gender transition, refusing to provide easy or comfortable conclusions to the complexities of navigating this timely issue.” The playwright specified that two of the actors also be transgender. The play continued for 22 performances, received excellent reviews, and garnered several San Diego Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding Dramatic Production, Outstanding New Play, and Outstanding Ensemble. The ProtoStar Foundation was privileged to be a major sponsor of the production by making a $5,000 contribution.
Organized in 1987, the Diversionary Theatre is the third oldest continuously producing LGBT theatre in the United States. Its mission is “to develop new works and produce plays and musicals that explore the issues, characters, and stories of the LGBT community in all its complexity and diversity.” The main performance area has 106 seats. Support comes from donations from individuals and grants from various governmental and arts agencies, foundations, and corporations.
