ProtoStar Group

Home ProtoStar Group

The ProtoStar Group is a set of pioneering companies that find resourceful ways to fund innovative projects and organizations that have a social mission.  We will identify, develop, and invest in prototypes that will hopefully become star companies, hence the combined word “ProtoStar.”  A protostar also happens to be a young star in the universe.

We endeavor to:

Empower organizations to better serve unserved and underserved communities worldwide.

Challenge nonprofit entities to be self-sustaining and more entrepreneurial.

Transform the way in which funders engage in philanthropy.

We are a hybrid between a philanthropic foundation, a venture capital firm, and an incubator.

1.    As a Philanthropic Foundation. We give away grants to nonprofit organizations that have a well-defined mission and a measurable social impact.

2.    As a Social Venture Capitalist. We fund start-ups and new projects that will provide us with a return on our investment.  To be eligible, the start-up or project must have a:

a.  Clear social mission.

b.  Sound business plan.

c.  Strong management team.

Such investments could include making small loans at below-market rates (microcredit), purchasing partnership interests, buying preferred shares, or investing in common stock.

3.    As an Incubator.  We identify worthy projects, nurture them, and if successful, launch them as independent entities.  Such entities may include nonprofit organizations, benefit corporations, and commercial companies that are not only profitable, but also socially responsible.  Depending on the nature of the enterprise, we may retain an equity interest.
