We organized the ProtoStar Group to operate for charitable, scientific, literary, religious, and educational purposes, including the encouragement or promotion of arts and culture, both domestically in the United States and internationally. We focus on needs that have not been met or are not being met very well. To search for such unserved and underserved needs, we will utilize traditional methods as well as proactive means. We will not rely exclusively on grant applications, but will actively search for projects that are unique. And if a project does not yet exist, we will create it, incubate it, and launch it. We will take calculated risks and are not afraid of failure.
At this early stage in our development, we will cast a fairly wide net. Our areas of interest include the following:
1. Children’s Education and Athletics
2. Environment
3. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer (“LGBTQ”) issues
4. Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
5. Media, Arts, and Culture (“MAC”)
6. Persons with Disabilities
7. Senior/Elder Care and Well-Being
8. Socioeconomic Justice
These headings are intended to be guidelines, as we are open to projects that may not necessarily fit neatly into one or more of these categories. We would be very interested in your ideas. Please feel free to Share Your Ideas.
We note that an important part of what ProtoStar does is to properly manage expectations in a realistic and respectful manner. The fact that a particular idea or proposal may fall within one or more of ProtoStar’s Areas of Interest does not necessarily mean that it will be funded. This caveat would apply even in cases where ProtoStar may have solicited an application from an organization. The application must still undergo a rigorous vetting process, and the decision of whether or not to ultimately fund a particular idea or project will depend on a number of different factors.
